The project was a new two level building housing a science lab, art room and prep store room on the first floor and three GLA rooms on the ground floor. The building is linked by a concrete pathway to the Middle school GLA buildings, which allows access to the lift.
The science building is a 200mm concrete block construction with concrete first floor and balconies. A key feature in the science lab was the benches, that were constructed from 13mm X grade compact laminate with chemical resistant stainless steel sinks and tap ware. A fume cupboard was installed with access from the science room and the prep room.
The art room was an open space design with a teacher’s desk and a large wash sink for students.
A key feature of the buildings GLAs on the ground floor were separated by sound rated operable walls to allow multiple uses for this space. The internal walls were lined with 600mm x 600mm Autex acoustic tiles and the plasterboard walls were painted with a specialised white board paint. This allows the teachers and students to use any of the walls as whiteboards. Beside the GLA room an enclosure was constructed for use of an electric kiln.
The colourful external façade was designed to client requirement, resulting in a pleasant and spacious facility inside and out. A major challenge was working in with the remainder of the school still operating ensuing safety was at a high level to avoid any risk to the children attending the school.
