Kal’ang is dedicated to providing care and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island elders but its doors are open to non-indigenous members of the community in need of care as well.
Design features include lots of lovely outdoor space to sit in protected garden settings, shelters designed with traditional ‘gunya’ roof lines, the use of natural materials, planting of native gardens, lots of fresh air and light, disability friendly and spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and artifacts to be displayed.
The central courtyard will feature reference to stories that are unique to Fraser Island and include plants, symbols and materials such as the coloured sands, that have their roots in the island. A seat for resting was constructed in the shape of Fraser Island especially for the courtyard.
